Miles Yu, Ph.D., is one of America’s leading scholars and strategists on China, East Asia, military history, and U.S.-China relations. A professor of East Asia and military history at the United States Naval Academy since 1994, he served as the principal China policy adviser to the U.S. secretary of state on the Policy Planning staff at the State Department from 2019 to 2021. He is currently a senior fellow and director of the China Center at the Hudson Institute, a senior fellow at the Institute for Indo-Pacific Security, and a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution.
A prolific author and commentator, Dr. Yu has written extensively on Chinese military and political history, U.S.-China relations, and contemporary strategy. His books include OSS in China: Prelude to Cold War and The Dragon’s War: Allied Operations and the Fate of China, 1937-1947. He regularly leads as “Red” in major U.S. military wargames. Yu is the host of the Hudson Institute’s weekly China Insider podcast and writes the biweekly column “Red Horizon” for The Washington Times.
Yu earned his bachelor’s degree from Nankai University, his master’s degree from Swarthmore College, and his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. He combines scholarly depth with firsthand insight into the Chinese Communist system.
