Maj. Patrick Moran joined the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2025 as a U.S. Marine Corps Fellow. Moran, a native of Columbus, Ohio, was commissioned in the Marine Corps in July 2011. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice with a minor in psychology from the University of Cincinnati.

Moran was selected as a combat engineer officer after graduating from The Basic School and was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California. He served as a bridge operations platoon commander and Company B executive officer. In February 2015, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel as the Train Advise Assist Command-South regional infrastructure officer. Moran assisted in the coordination of joint force redeployment efforts, including personnel, material, and equipment.

Moran completed Expeditionary Warfare School in 2019 and reported to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion as a company commander. As a company commander, Moran served as a regimental engineer and provided direct support to deploying battalions within the 1st Marine Regiment. Upon selection for major in 2021, he received orders to the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. Moran was assigned as the G3 Southeast Asia planner and oversaw a portfolio of various exercises, including Balikatan, Kamandag, RIMPAC, MASA, and Cobra Gold. In 2023, Moran received orders to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion as the operations officer and served as the executive officer the following year.

Moran’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
