James T. HiraiJames “Jim” Hirai joined DKI APCSS as deputy director in April 2006 upon retirement from active duty in the U.S. Army.

His experience in the Asia-Pacific region includes command of U.S. Army Alaska; chief of staff U.S. Army Pacific; command of the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; command of the United States Army Garrison Hawaii; and two tours on the Commander U.S. Pacific Command staff.  At USPACOM headquarters, he served as a joint exercise officer, executive assistant to the Director of Operations (J3), and as the Commander’s speechwriter.  He also served as Deputy Commandant, United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  His career included six years with Army Rangers and tours with units in Washington, Texas, Kentucky, and Germany as an infantryman in Air Assault, Airborne Ranger, Mechanized and Light units. He served in Combined Forces Command – Afghanistan where his major function there was working in the Office of Security Cooperation – Afghanistan helping to develop the Afghan national security forces.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii – Manoa and a Master’s Degree in Education from Troy State University.  He is a graduate of the Infantry Officers Basic and Advanced Courses, Armed Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army War College
