A new Security Nexus perspective by Dr. Srini Sitaraman, professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, examines how Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict is exacerbating ethnic tensions and security challenges in India’s northeastern state of Manipur.
Titled “Manipur and the Myanmar Conflict: Challenge for India with Implications for Regional Security Competition,” the paper explores how armed resistance, refugee flows, and trafficking networks from Myanmar are destabilizing border regions—especially Manipur, where ethnic linkages with Myanmar’s western provinces have intensified local unrest.
Dr. Sitaraman argues that New Delhi must move beyond a one-size-fits-all approach and adopt a region-specific strategy. He recommends a security-focused response in Manipur, diplomatic engagement in Nagaland, and humanitarian support in Mizoram.
The paper also highlights the role of China’s growing influence in Myanmar, warning that Beijing’s support for the military junta could indirectly pressure India’s border states and shift the regional balance of power.
