U.S. Strategic Rebalance: Asia-Pacific Perspectives

The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies is hosting a workshop this week on key considerations and opportunities associated with the United States’ strategic rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific region. Selected policy and flag level representatives from U.S. treaty partners and other key countries – including China, Russia, and India – are meeting to discuss the rebalance from the perspectives of defense, development, and diplomacy. Participants include policy/flag level representatives from government, academia, media, private sector and NGOs in the Asia-Pacific region.

More than 40 international security practitioners gather for a group photo during the 'Cyberia: Identity, Cyberspace and National Security' workshop. The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies hosted the two-day workshop held Aug. 21-22 in Singapore with the Combating Terrorism Fellowship Program. At the workshop, participants focused on the issue of identity and security in Southeast Asia and examined cultural representations in cyberspace.

APCSS and DTRA cohost ‘mobile’ APOC

As the United States rebalances its focus on the Asia-Pacific, there is greater demand for information on issues in the Asia-Pacific Region. The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies recently hosted its second mobile Asia-Pacific Orientation Course in the Washington, D.C. area. The three-day course was held April 17-19 and was co-hosted by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). Seventy-six Fellows from DTRA, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and various service headquarters, as well as the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Agency for International Development and others, completed the course. Several APCSS faculty and staff participated in two U.S. PACOM-supported Science and Technology workshops this week in Honolulu.  Soft power efforts with a focus on “Forging Regional Science and Technology Ties” were a key focus area of the Pacific Operational Science and Technology Workshop.   APCSS Participants included Deputy Director Brig. Gen. (Ret.)
