Foreword
Strategic Context
The Indo-Pacific is the gravitational center of global security in the twenty-first century. Home to the world’s most dynamic economies and vital sea lanes, it is also a landscape defined by rapid military modernization, contested domains, and intensifying competition. Preserving peace depends not only on credible military advantage, but on disciplined leadership and ironclad partnerships that uphold regional stability.
The Role of the Center
For more than three decades, the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies has served as a vital forum. It is a place where military professionals and security practitioners from across the region exchange ideas to build a more secure future. Our work is rooted in a simple truth: lasting security is built through relationships. By fostering trust and shared strategic insight, the Center empowers a network of leaders capable of navigating the complex challenges of our time.
Why This Book Matters
America’s Strategic Edge—the second volume in the Strategic Edge series—arrives at a historic inflection point. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this volume examines the pillars necessary to preserve stability in the decades ahead: Deterrence, Lethality, and Warrior Ethos.
These three themes are inextricably linked. Deterrence provides the space for peace; lethality ensures that deterrence is credible; and the warrior ethos provides the moral and ethical foundation that governs the use of power. Under the editorial leadership of Dr. James M. Minnich, this collection brings together a diverse group of scholars and practitioners to explore how these elements sustain strategic advantage in an increasingly complex security environment.
Closing
The future of the Indo-Pacific will be written by leaders who combine strategic clarity with professional competence and a deep commitment to service. Our strategic edge rests not only on advanced technology, but on the professionalism and partnerships that have long sustained stability across the region.
It is my hope that these insights will serve as a catalyst for dialogue and a guide for those entrusted with the defense of the Indo-Pacific. As we honor two and a half centuries of American history, we remain steadfast in our responsibility to preserve peace through strength, character, and collaboration.
