Ambassador Peter M. Haymond joined DKI APCS as Senior Diplomatic Fellow in September 2023. Ambassador Haymond led the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane, Laos, from January 2020 to August 2023. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2016 to 2019. Ambassador Haymond has also served as Director of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs in the Department of State’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu, China; and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane, Laos.

Earlier in his Foreign Service career, Ambassador Haymond served in Washington, DC, as Division Chief of the Office of Energy and Commodities in the Bureau of Economic and Energy Affairs and as Arabian Peninsula Officer in the Office of the Counterterrorism Coordinator. He was also Deputy Director of the Office of Office of Economics and Development Affairs in the Bureau of International Organization Affairs. Earlier overseas assignments included the U.S. embassies in China as an economic officer, in Laos as a narcotics affairs officer, and in Thailand and Korea as a consular officer. Ambassador Haymond worked at a financial firm in Thailand and conducted doctoral research in Morocco before joining the Foreign Service.

Ambassador Haymond earned a B.A. degree from Brigham Young University and M.A.L.D. and Ph.D. degrees from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He speaks Lao, Thai, Mandarin Chinese, and some French.
