APCSS welcomes three new Fellows to faculty

(Honolulu) – The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS) recently welcomed three military Fellows as new members of its academic faculty. They are Col. Todd Fish, and Lt. Cols. Benjamin Hwang and Kenneth Lawrence. Col. Todd Fish Each is serving a one-year tour to expand their strategic-level knowledge of issues impacting the security environment in the Asia-Pacific region and world. New Occasional Paper on Water Security

Water is the topic of the latest Occasional Paper published by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. “State Water Resource Competition and the Resulting Consequences of Diminished Water Supply” by Mitchell L. Gildea looks at state competition and conflict over diminishing water resources in the Asia-Pacific region. Originally produced as a masters program thesis, the paper directly compares the Indus and Mekong regions showing the relational challenges and successes of the riparian countries involved and the role of China as an upstream water partner. 141 Fellows Complete APOC 14-2

(Honolulu) – Security practitioners from nine locations completed the Asia-Pacific Orientation Course (APOC 14-2) today at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS). One hundred forty-one military and civilian Fellows attended the five-day course led by international doctorate-level faculty. Among the 141 Fellows, were eight APCSS staff, including Director Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Dan Leaf. The course enhanced attendees’ knowledge of critical socio-economic, military, political and cultural issues impacting the region’s evolving security relationships. Another record-breaking APOC graduates

By far the largest course ever run by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, the Asia-Pacific Orientation Course (APOC) 14-1 concluded in Honolulu today, July 25. Balancing the Rebalance

Former APCSS military professor Col. Bryan Truesdell recently completed a paper entitled “Balance within the Rebalance: The Supporting Role of the U.S. Military in the Asia-Pacific Region” as part of his Army War College Fellowship. This paper discusses the need for the U.S. to use its military cautiously when attempting to enhance its influence in the Asia-Pacific region. Truesdell outlines why United States is interested in the Asia-Pacific region and assesses current U.S. strategy in the region as well as the role the U.S. military plays in the region with respect to diplomatic and economic efforts.
