DKI APCSS Professors Support Forum on Maritime Law Enforcement

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) provided subject matter expertise to the Southeast Asia Maritime Law Enforcement Initiative (SEAMLEI) Coast Guard Commander’s Forum, which took place from April 4-7 in Tumon, Guam. The U.S. and Philippine Coast Guards hosted the annual forum, which serves to enhance regional stability by promoting maritime safety, security cooperation, coordination and information sharing. ‘Inclusion’ Marks the First Graduating Class of the Comprehensive Security Cooperation Course

On March 30, seventy Fellows representing 30 different nations graduated from the first Comprehensive Security Cooperation Course 22-1 held at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) in Honolulu, Hawaii, from February 24- March 30. The Fellows ranged from high-ranking military officers, directors of government agencies, law enforcement, and leaders of nonprofit organizations. The Comprehensive Security Cooperation Course Launches with 70 Fellows in Resident

DKI APCSS welcomes a group of 70 security practitioners from the Indo-Pacific region who will be the first graduates of the new Comprehensive Security Cooperation Course (CSC).   The participants range from high ranking military officers, directors of government agencies, law enforcement, and leaders of nonprofit organizations. Fifty-seven of the Fellows have travelled internationally from their home countries to attend the course. Alumnus Dr. Novil Wijesekara speaks at the Comprehensive Security Cooperation 22-1

As part of his participation in CMC, Dr. Wijesekara began implementing a Fellows Project titled, “Build the Capacity of Religious Leaders to Prevent Violent Extremism in Sri Lanka through a Public Health Approach.” Due to the ongoing pandemic he was forced to redirect his efforts to produce a workshop titled, “COVID-19 and Beyond.” In partnership with DKI APCSS, he designed the workshop, recruited speakers and participants, served as a speaker, and co-hosted the event.  The workshop participants presented South Asia perspectives on COVID-19 prevention and mitigation. The participants shared best practices in responding to the pandemic and identified common challenges that the countries of South Asia were facing.

Twenty-Two Senior Leaders Graduated from the Transnational Security Cooperation Course

Twenty-two senior leaders from 19 countries and the United States completed the Transnational Security Cooperation (TSC) course 21-3 which was conducted in-resident in Honolulu, HI, from Dec. 5th to 10th.    The fellows participating in the course represented diverse nationalities from Bangladesh, Colombia, Fiji, Indonesia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Palau, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, and Taiwan. Non-governmental organizations in attendance included the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Criminal Police Organization. A record-setting 235 Fellows graduated from the Indo-Pacific Orientation Course!

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies graduated a record-setting 235 Fellows from Indo-Pacific Orientation Course 21-2. Administered November 15-19, 2021, IPOC 21-2 was the second course planned and executed in a HyFlex model. Professor James Minnich, course manager, explained that "HyFlex, or Hybrid-Flexible is a course construct where some Fellows participate in-person and others participate virtually." CSRT 21-1: Counterterrorism Course Goes Out with a Bang, Paves the Way for New, Comprehensive Security Cooperation Program

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies completed the virtual Comprehensive Maritime Security Cooperation (CMSC) 21-1 module held June 14-17, 2021. For 80 Fellows from 20 countries, this module was an opportunity to refresh regional awareness of the importance of maritime security. The Royal Thai Armed Forces’ Strategic Studies Center of the National Defence Studies Institute hosted their second Senior Security Studies Program, May 17-21, 2021, in Bangkok.  The intensive one-week program for senior Thai security sector leaders emphasized key geopolitical and security trends in the region as well as capacities to manage these for both leaders and institutions.  Center leadership and faculty members from The Daniel K.
