Dr. Justin Nankivell

Dr. Justin Nankivell has been appointed as the new Associate Dean for Academics at the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies. This position at APCSS was formerly known as the Deputy Dean, College of Security Studies. This role has been redefined and expanded to include alignment of all facets of the APCSS executive education program with U.S. Pacific Command and Office of the Secretary of Defense policy priorities.

An expert in international law, Dr. Nankivell has been at the Center since 2008. Prior to his appointment as associate dean, he served as an associate professor. U.S. Army Col. (Ret.) David Shanahan who previously held this position continues to serve as a faculty member at the Center.

According to Center Director, Lt. Gen. (Ret) Dan Leaf, “Dr. Nankivell was selected from a group of six highly qualified internal applicants. The selection process for this position was transparent and rigorous, and highlighted the extraordinary knowledge and experience of all the applicants. My thanks to all of the applicants who competed for the position and to the CSS/HR team that executed a thoughtful, disciplined selection process.”

The Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies is a Department of Defense institute that addresses regional and global security issues. Military and civilian representatives, most from the United States and Asia-Pacific nations, participate in a comprehensive program of executive education, professional exchanges and outreach events, both in Hawaii and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The Center supports U.S. Pacific Command by developing and sustaining relationships among security practitioners and national security establishments throughout the region. APCSS’ mission is to build capacities and communities of interest by educating, connecting and empowering security practitioners to advance Asia-Pacific security. It is one of the Department of Defense’s five regional security studies centers.

Since opening in 1995, more than 9,400 alumni representing over 122 countries and territories have attended APCSS courses and workshops.
