Captain Joshua P. Taylor came to the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in December 2022 following his tour as South Asia Division Chief at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Captain Taylor is an Indo-Pacific Foreign Area Officer (FAO) native of Mahwah, New Jersey. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1997, receiving a Bachelor of Science in History. Niel K. Kaneshiro

Niel K Kaneshiro joined the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in July 2023 as a civilian faculty member, contributing extensive experience in intelligence, law enforcement, and counterterrorism. His federal government career began in 2003 with the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) in Washington, D.C., where he provided foreign intelligence and terrorist threat assessments to support priority U.S. Navy acquisitions and technology development programs. Climate adaptation and building climate literacy were the focus of a workshop hosted by the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. The workshop titled “Climate Adaptation: Building Partnerships for Resilience in South Asia” was held August 21-24, 2023 in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dr. Jeremiah “Lumpy” Lumbaca, has a new article entitled “Every Taiwan Citizen a Resistance Member: Preparing for a Chinese Occupation” published by the Modern War Institute at West Point.  In the article, Lumbaca creates a scenario where the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has successfully invaded and occupied Taiwan, despite previous predictions that such an invasion would be too costly for China. The Chinese occupation is extensive, with forces present in all aspects of Taiwanese life. New Policy Brief on China’s Nuclear Modernization and Northeast Asian Security

In a new policy brief published in the ASIA-Pacific Leadership network, DKI APCSS Prof. Lami Kim examines the implications of China’s nuclear weapons build-up on Northeast Asian security. Kim argues that the threat lies less in direct nuclear risk to the US homeland and more in the potential impact on vital US interests in the region, including the increased risk of an emboldened invasion of Taiwan and possible nuclear arms pursuits by Japan and South Korea.
