Security strategies and effective governance were discussed in several recent articles by APCSS faculty members recently. “Bejing’s Grand Strategy Failure,” co-authored by APCSS professors Dr. Jeffrey Hornung and Dr. Alexander Vuving, was published by The National Interest website.  This commentary looks at China’s strategy in the East and South China Seas and why, they believe, is destined to fail. The latest issue of "Asian Politics & Policy" was edited by APCSS' Dr. Alexander Vuving and includes articles written by several APCSS faculty members and an alumnus. APCSS Professors discuss thawing relations between India and Pakistan, and Maritime Security

India-Pakistan relations and U.S. dominance in Maritime Security are two of the latest Opinion-Editorials written by APCSS faculty members. APCSS' newest faculty member, Dr. Saira Yamin,  was recently featured in the Christian Science Monitor . Her Op-Ed entitled: "How a Glacier could Thaw Dangerous India and Pakistan Freeze," looks at the impact of a recent avalanche which killed more than 125 Pakistani soldiers and civilians. According to Yamin, in the wake of the avalanche, Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani (APCSS Alumni, EC97-2) is calling for demilitarization, an opportunity that must not be missed by India. -+ “Issues for Engagement: Asian Perspectives on Transnational Security Challenges,” edited by David Fouse, is the latest book published by the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies. According to Fouse, “The chapters in this volume analyze security priorities at the individual country level and gauge each country’s attempts at bilateral and multilateral security cooperation on transnational security challenges. Our intention is to provide policymakers and other government officials with a useful and convenient reference tool to draw upon to engage specific countries in the Asia-Pacific region.” […]

Two APCSS professors selected to present at Asia Policy Assembly

APCSS professors  Virginia Watson and  Alexander Vuving  will present papers at the Asia Policy Assembly, an inaugural conference of the National Asia Research Program.  The two day conference will be held in Washington, D.C., June 17-18. Dr. Watson  will be presenting her paper entitled “Getting Blue and Ready: Water Governance in Asia.”  Dr. Vuving   will present his paper entitled “The Transformation of Vietnam’s Behavior and its Lessons for Policy Toward Recalcitrant States.” […]
