Eun Jung Yi, Nurul Hidayah, and Prabaswari (Ruri) from the Comprehensive Security Cooperation course (CSC 22-2) initiated the Women Inspiring Women Network (WIWN) and hosted the inaugural gathering online on March 17, 2023. After completing a course in Hawaii, many of the Fellows expressed their desire to stay connected and continue to build the friendships they had forged during their time together. Alumnus Erich Meier Jr. Completes Fellowship Project Focusing on Human Rights

Erich Meier Jr. graduated from the Comprehensive Security Cooperation (CSC) course in March of 2022. While he was eager to complete his Fellow’s Project on maritime security, he soon discovered that his project would have to change. After the course, Bangladesh officials notified him that his planned symposium on maritime security had to be cancelled due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. DKI APCSS Alumna and New Zealand Amb. Amanda Ellis (TSC 17-1) returned to the Center to visit the Fellows of CSC 22-3. On October 12, She presented her lecture on “Leveraging the Diversity Dividend: How inclusive action leads to sustainable development outcomes.” Her lecture underscored the importance of including women in solutions to issues such as climate change and planetary health. Admiral Linda Fagan Calls for a ‘Unity of Effort’ to Enforce Maritime Security

Fagan, an alumnus of the Transnational Security Cooperation (TSC) course 19-1, was honored as the first female Service Chief of any U.S. military service on June 1, 2022. In her remarks to the 103 Fellows, she expounded on the U.S. Coast Guard’s various responsibilities, which include search and rescue, maritime safety, environmental protection, port security, and Illegal, Unregulated, Unreported (IUU) Fishing. Fagan emphasized that to enforce Maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region it will take a “unity of effort.”

Mr. Krishna Bahadur Raut Receives the 2021 ‘Alumni of the Year’ award

DKI APCSS recognized Raut’s contributions as an alumnus who significantly improved the peace and security within his country of Nepal and in the Indo-Pacific Region.  Raut’s Fellows Project resulted in seven new provincial emergency operation centers. He drafted eight of the fifteen laws required to support the expansion of the EOCs. He also played an instrumental role in passing significant policies that included the Disaster Management Act, Risk Reduction Policy, and the National Strategic Action Plan.

International Fellows from the U.S. Army War College Visit the Center

On April 1, 2022, DKI APCSS hosted 40 international officers from the U.S Army War College’s International Fellows Program. Ranging from lieutenant colonel to brigadier general, the Fellows were hand-selected from the Chief of Staff of the Army to participate in a 10-month, in-resident course at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. For the last seven months, the Fellows have studied the role of land power, as part of a unified, joint or combined force, in support of the U.S. national military strategy. Their visit to Hawaii provided an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the various Indo-Pacific organizations who are available to partner with their militaries and countries.  In addition to DKI APCSS, the Fellows visited the Indo-Pacific Command, the U.S. Army Pacific Command, and the Center for Excellence in Disaster Management.

Alumnus Dr. Novil Wijesekara speaks at the Comprehensive Security Cooperation 22-1

As part of his participation in CMC, Dr. Wijesekara began implementing a Fellows Project titled, “Build the Capacity of Religious Leaders to Prevent Violent Extremism in Sri Lanka through a Public Health Approach.” Due to the ongoing pandemic he was forced to redirect his efforts to produce a workshop titled, “COVID-19 and Beyond.” In partnership with DKI APCSS, he designed the workshop, recruited speakers and participants, served as a speaker, and co-hosted the event.  The workshop participants presented South Asia perspectives on COVID-19 prevention and mitigation. The participants shared best practices in responding to the pandemic and identified common challenges that the countries of South Asia were facing. 

Twenty-Two Senior Leaders Graduated from the Transnational Security Cooperation Course

Twenty-two senior leaders from 19 countries and the United States completed the Transnational Security Cooperation (TSC) course 21-3 which was conducted in-resident in Honolulu, HI, from Dec. 5th to 10th.    The fellows participating in the course represented diverse nationalities from Bangladesh, Colombia, Fiji, Indonesia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Palau, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, and Taiwan. Non-governmental organizations in attendance included the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Criminal Police Organization. The three US fellows in attendance represented the US Coast Guard, Department of State, and Department of Defense.   [...]
