DKI APCSS Collaborates with the Thai Strategic Studies Center on Senior Course

Faculty and senior leadership from the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies traveled to Thailand in July to participate in the Senior Security Studies Program hosted by the Royal Thai Armed Forces’ Strategic Studies Center of the National Defence Studies Institute.  The intensive one-week course for senior Thai security sector leaders, held in Bangsaen, Chonburi, emphasized the impact of change in the region as well as the capacity to manage change for both leaders and institutions. The Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies completed its second iteration of the Comprehensive Security Cooperation (CSC) course, graduating 82 Fellows from 29 countries. The 5-week, intensive program, took place from May 25- June 20. Through plenary lectures and small-group seminars, the Fellows examined the geostrategic landscape of the Indo-Pacific region. Understanding the complexity of the Indo-Pacific region was the focus of the recent Indo-Pacific Orientation Course recently held at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) in Honolulu, HI. Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS) provided subject matter expertise to the Southeast Asia Maritime Law Enforcement Initiative (SEAMLEI) Coast Guard Commander’s Forum, which took place from April 4-7 in Tumon, Guam. The U.S. and Philippine Coast Guards hosted the annual forum, which serves to enhance regional stability by promoting maritime safety, security cooperation, coordination and information sharing. Alumnus Dr. Novil Wijesekara speaks at the Comprehensive Security Cooperation 22-1

As part of his participation in CMC, Dr. Wijesekara began implementing a Fellows Project titled, “Build the Capacity of Religious Leaders to Prevent Violent Extremism in Sri Lanka through a Public Health Approach.” Due to the ongoing pandemic he was forced to redirect his efforts to produce a workshop titled, “COVID-19 and Beyond.” In partnership with DKI APCSS, he designed the workshop, recruited speakers and participants, served as a speaker, and co-hosted the event.  The workshop participants presented South Asia perspectives on COVID-19 prevention and mitigation. The participants shared best practices in responding to the pandemic and identified common challenges that the countries of South Asia were facing.

Twenty-Two Senior Leaders Graduated from the Transnational Security Cooperation Course

Twenty-two senior leaders from 19 countries and the United States completed the Transnational Security Cooperation (TSC) course 21-3 which was conducted in-resident in Honolulu, HI, from Dec. 5th to 10th.    The fellows participating in the course represented diverse nationalities from Bangladesh, Colombia, Fiji, Indonesia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Palau, Australia, Canada, France, Japan, and Taiwan. A record-setting 235 Fellows graduated from the Indo-Pacific Orientation Course!

The Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies graduated a record-setting 235 Fellows from Indo-Pacific Orientation Course 21-2. Administered November 15-19, 2021, IPOC 21-2 was the second course planned and executed in a HyFlex model.
