Lieutenant Colonel Sean Tucker joined the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies team in July 2024 and is a Military Professor. He previously served as a Security Cooperation Officer (SCO) at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo with the Mutual Defense Assistance Office (MDAO), where he was the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) team lead and Director of Japan Air Capability Development. Korea’s Unification Debate: Diverging Views of Kim Jong Un and Yoon Suk-yeol

Dr. Lami Kim’s new article published by Foreign Policy explores the diverging visions of Korean unification presented by South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. In a recent speech, Yoon called for the creation of a “unified, free, and democratic nation" across the Korean Peninsula, arguing that unification is incomplete until North Koreans are free. In contrast, Kim renounced unification in December 2023, signaling a desire for a permanent division between the two Koreas.

Dr. Virginia B. Watson participated in the first Thailand Security Dialogue held in Bangkok, Thailand on August 26-28, 2024. She served as a panel member in the session “Energy and Environmental Security: Implications for Sustainable Peace to the Region,” presenting a briefing on “Climate Change, Energy, and Defense Nexus.”

Ian N. Meyers

Lieutenant Colonel Ian Meyers assumed the duties of U.S. Army Broadening Opportunity Fellow at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in 2024. He most recently served at the  21st Theatre Logistics Command and the 7th Mission Support Command in Germany as the G4 and the Theater Augmentation Cell(TAC) for V Corp, conducting logistics operations in support of Ukraine (2021-2024). Prior to this, Lt. Col. Meyers served with the 90th Aviation Support Battalion in Texas and was its commander from 2020-2021. From 2016-2019, he served as the Readiness Officer for the 311 Expeditionary  Sustainment Command (ESC) in California, maintaining the overall battlefield readiness for the one-star command. He was commissioned in 2006 Lt. Col. Meyers calls San Antonio, Texas, his hometown. He earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations with a minor in military science from St. Mary’s University and a master’s degree in international relations security issues, also from St. Mary’s. He has also attended several professional military courses throughout his career. Lt. Col. Meyers is an avid watch aficionado and owns several high-quality Swiss timepieces. When he’s off-duty, he can often be found riding a Harley-Davidson.

Major Kyle J. “Slash” Brown joined DKI APCSS as an Air Force Fellow in 2024. Before this, he was the F-22 Branch Chief assigned to the Combat Forces Division, Air Combat Command (ACC), Joint Base Langley-Eustis. He is the Air Force’s F-22 subject matter expert, leading the plans and requirements to ensure U.S. Air Superiority. He managed billions in research and procurement across the Future Years Defense Program and directed National Security Strategy implementation for the F-22. Lieutenant Commander Nathaniel Baladad assumed the duties of U.S. Coast Guard Fellow at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in 2024 after most recently serving as Chief of Intelligence at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi from July 2021 to June 2024. During this assignment, Lt. Cmdr. In a significant step towards bolstering both national and regional security, seven dedicated Fellows from Malaysia have drafted a comprehensive Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) National Action Plan (NAP). This initiative, undertaken during their tenure at the Comprehensive Security Cooperation course (CSC 24-2) at the Daniel K. Inouye Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI APCSS), showcases Malaysia's commitment to upholding the principles enshrined in United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325.
